A lifelong public servant, Steve Heretick has spent more than four decades fighting for safer streets and a stronger, fairer justice system. After earning a B.A. from William & Mary and a J.D. from Villanova, he clerked for a federal judge in Philadelphia before joining the U.S. Department of Justice’s Criminal Division, where he prosecuted complex federal cases and earned the DOJ Award for Public Service. Making Portsmouth his home, Steve opened his own practice and was soon elected to Portsmouth City Council (2004–2012).
In 2015, voters sent Steve to Richmond, where he represented the 79th House District from 2016 to 2022. On the Courts of Justice Committee and as Vice‑Chair of Counties, Cities & Towns, he forged a reputation as a tough‑but‑fair lawmaker who delivered real results for Portsmouth families. His record of holding violent offenders accountable while championing victims’ rights earned bipartisan respect and multiple professional accolades, including an AV‑Preeminent peer‑review rating shared by fewer than three percent of attorneys nationwide. Steve and his wife, Stephanie, have made Portsmouth their home for over three decades, raising their son, Stephenson, who serves as a firefighter/paramedic. The family remains active in local community service and enjoys spending time on the Elizabeth River. Now, as a candidate for Commonwealth’s Attorney, Steve is ready to restore confidence in an office that has too often made headlines for the wrong reasons. He will bring seasoned courtroom experience, uncompromising integrity, and a laser‑focused commitment to public safety to ensure justice is swift, fair, and equal for every Portsmouth resident. |
